  • What Does SARTREX Do?
    We provide courses, mentorship, consultancy, education and training and community worldwide with a yearly returning program! We connect people together, making long lasting friendships and international standardization of education!
  • What is SARTREX?
    At SARTREX (Search and Rescue International Training Exchange), we offer a unique 3-month program, with a 2 week in person in international training search and rescue exchange program somewhere in the world. Mentees from around the world come to a country after going through a program screening to learn about search and rescue, mentored by an international team of instructors and from each other hosted by a hosting team or government. Through our in person training exchange events, online courses and video calls, we provide comprehensive training to prepare you for real-life situations. SARTREX helps to assist to develop SAR organizations and capability worldwide, assisting the rescue of persons in danger!
  • What SARTREX Does NOT do.
    We don't develop new education besides our own internal training for our staff, we teach and provide education that is already taught worldwide according to international standards like INSARAG, NASAR, MRA, ICS ect. We don't provide SAR operational capability on request to assist during disaster, we are a educational provider. Set guidelines on SAR, we follow & teach best practices.
  • How does the online program look like?
    The online courses offered by SARTREX are designed to provide comprehensive and engaging learning experiences in various aspects of search and rescue. Here's what you can expect from our online courses: 1- Diverse Content: Our courses cover a wide range of topics related to search and rescue, including wilderness survival, technical rescue techniques, navigation skills, first aid, incident management, and more. Interactive Learning: We employ interactive elements such as quizzes, simulations, case studies, and multimedia resources to enhance learning engagement and comprehension. 2- Flexible Schedule: Most of our online courses are self-paced, allowing participants to study at their own convenience and progress through the material according to their schedule. However a majority of the courses have a hard deadline. 3- Expert Instruction: Courses are developed and taught by experienced search and rescue professionals, ensuring that participants receive high-quality instruction and valuable insights from industry experts. 4- Certification Opportunities: Depending on the course, participants may have the opportunity to earn certifications or digital badges upon successful completion, validating their knowledge and skills in specific areas of search and rescue. 5- Accessible Resources: Course materials are easily accessible online, enabling participants to access lectures, readings, videos, and other resources from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • How long does the program last?
    A full SARTREX program normally lasts 3 months, with 2 weeks in person in a country in the world.
  • Will i get a personal assigned mentor/instructor?
    Yes, you will get an assigned mentor that supervisors your progress during the SARTREX program.
  • What is a module?
    A module is your core team within SARTREX, consisting of five participants who train, work, and support each other throughout the program. This small group structure fosters teamwork, close collaboration, and shared learning experiences. Each module is led by a Module Leader, an experienced participant who provides guidance, coordination, and leadership within the team. Your module is different from your focus group, as modules focus on teamwork and applied learning, while focus groups provide specialized training on specific SAR topics.
  • What is a module Leader?

  • Will there be time off to explore during my stay at the SARTREX program?
    Yes! During your attendance at the SARTREX in person part of the program there will be down time for you to explore the surroundings.
  • What is a focus group?
    A focus group in SARTREX is a specialized training group where participants receive dedicated, in-depth instruction on a specific subject related to Search and Rescue (SAR). Each participant is assigned to a focus group based on their skills, experience, and interests. Unlike general training sessions, focus groups allow for targeted learning, mentorship, and hands-on experience with expert instructors. They foster collaboration among participants and ensure a deeper understanding of advanced SAR topics.
  • What types of mentors/coaches/instructors are there?
    Type 1: SARTREX STAFF / I-IMT / L-IMT Mentors & Instructors: These instructors will be with you during the full length of the 3-month program. They help organize the event, and set out the educational program, and guidelines. They will be with you teaching online and in person during the physical part of the SARTREX program. Type 2: Physical Mentors & Instructors: These instructors & mentors are only assisting with the physical part of the SARTREX program. Most of the time, these are volunteers. Type 3: Online Mentorship & Coaches: These mentors are masters in online teaching, coaching, and education. They are generally responsible for writing our online e-learning modules, hosting webinars, and providing coaching and guidance after the event has ended. Most of the time, these are volunteers. Sometimes they help with the selection procedures for the program, but generally, they put most of the time into assisting the self-development aspect of our SARTREX attendees through their coaching. ‍Type 4: External Mentors & Instructors: These instructors will be with you during the full length of the 3-month program. They help organize the event, and set out the educational program, and guidelines. They will be with you teaching online and in person during the physical part of the SARTREX program. Remember the typing well! This will give you an indication of the type of instructor/mentor you have for that course!
  • Can I become a Volunteer?
    Yes! You can become a volunteer at SARTREX! we have many kinds of volunteers! Check out the volunteer recruitment page for the latest updates! We have a limited amount of space for volunteers as they stay with the other participants. You can help us with logistics, planning, selection procedures, food, catering or more!
  • Do you allow K9 Handlers with Dogs?
    We do allow K9 handlers BUT NO DOGS, due to we aren't able to provide facilities for your four legged furry friend, we don't allow dogs in our program. This because it travel with dogs is very complex. Exceptions can be made towards the Local Hosting team members if they live close to the organizing area OR when the event is dedicated towards K9 Handlers with Dogs.

    You can join SARTREX through the following steps: 1. Explore Opportunities: Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for announcements about upcoming events, training programs, participation, mentoring,hosting and volunteer opportunities. 2. Register: Once you find an opportunity that interests you, register through our online registration portal or follow the instructions provided for registration. 3. Attend a online information webinar and then apply for the selection procedure! Go through the selection procedure. 4. Selection procedure: Sadly we have limited space for our programs and we want to be sure you are a good fit for our program, so be fast be quick and good luck! You will go through 4 selection rounds. 5. Participate: Attend SARTREX events, programs, training sessions, or volunteer activities to engage in hands-on learning experiences, network with professionals, and contribute to search and rescue initiatives. 6.   • Do you have Physical Health requirements for attendance?
    Yes, we do have Physical & (Mental) Health Selection requirements to provide for adequate safety for participating in our program. These might vary from program to program. We recommend highly to read the program requirements in-depth before signing up to a program.
  • Can i Attend Just a Small part of the program?
    No, we require you to have full attendance during the program, our programs are designed to take participants from already being a hero to super hero! Meaning we need to have you during the whole program.
  • How do Mentors/volunteers/participants get selected for a program?

  • How long does a selection procedure take?
    The SARTREX selection procedure is a thorough and multi-step process designed to ensure the best candidates are chosen for the program. The timeline generally follows these stages: Application Submission (2-4 weeks) – Candidates submit their applications, which are reviewed for completeness and eligibility. Initial Screening & Shortlisting (1-2 weeks) – The selection committee assesses applications based on predefined criteria. Interviews & Evaluations (2-4 weeks) – Shortlisted candidates undergo interviews conducted by at least three committee members. Final Deliberations & Decision-Making (1-2 weeks) – The committee makes the final selection. Confirmation & Fee Collection (1-2 weeks) – Selected candidates receive an official invite upon paying the administrative fee. The full process typically takes 6-10 weeks, depending on the volume of applications and scheduling availability.

    How Can I Get a Scholarship for SARTREX? At SARTREX, we offer scholarships to support individuals who are passionate about Search and Rescue (SAR) but may face financial barriers to attending our program. Here’s how you can apply and improve your chances of receiving one: 1. Meet the Eligibility Criteria Scholarships are generally awarded to: Active SAR professionals or volunteers. Individuals from underrepresented or low-resource teams. Those demonstrating a strong commitment to the SAR community. Applicants who show leadership potential or a willingness to contribute their skills to the broader SAR network. 2. Submit a Strong Application You will need to complete an application form that typically includes: Personal information and SAR background. A statement of purpose explaining your experience, goals, and how attending SARTREX will benefit you and your team. Letters of recommendation from supervisors, colleagues, or SAR organizations. Proof of financial need (if applicable). 3. Demonstrate Impact and Commitment Scholarships are awarded based on merit and potential impact. Candidates who: Can demonstrate how they will apply the skills learned at SARTREX in real-world SAR operations. Show dedication to knowledge-sharing within their local SAR teams. Have an active role in SAR missions or training initiatives. are more likely to be selected. 4. Respect Deadlines Application deadlines are strictly enforced.   • What types of scholarships are there at SARTREX?
    At SARTREX we have 3 types of scholarships. General attendance: in this type of scholarship you will get the normal certifications during your presence at the program. Flight sponsorship: through our sponsors we are able to sometimes cover flight costs to the program so you can attend. Continued education scholarship: awarded to those that are having trouble to attend a professional education for rescue. All our scholarships are reviewed by our SARTREX scholarship committee.
  • Why does SARTREX charge an administrative fee of 120 euros for participation?
    We charge a 120-euro administrative fee to cover the costs of organizing our events. This helps us manage logistics, work with expert mentors, and ensure a great learning experience for all participants. The fee also ensures a high level of commitment from those participating in our Search and Rescue training and mentorship programs. This fee will only be charged after being accepted to the program.
  • Do i need to pay for food and accommodation?
    No, we cover the basic food accommodation and stay during your attendance at the program. You are not allowed to book different accommodations during your stay at the SARTREX program. Extra food or other options need to be purchased at your own expense.

Evaluation Process

After your application has been send in you are now a candidate for a SARTREX Program.

The Selection Committee will now review if you fit the administrative criteria for the program. You will receive an email with a confirmation of your selection or rejection. 

Interview Stage

During the interview stage you will talk with our selection committee. This will be done through an online video call.

 

The  interview can be repeated until the committee has a good understanding if you are a good fit for our upcoming program.

Final Selection

Did you make it trough the interview stage? Congratulations! You will be receiving an email with requirements to pay the 120 euro administrative fee. After payment you will be getting a official invite to attend the program.

Confirmation Details

You Get confirmation details upon selection. Then Receive information on program commencement, logistics, and essential guidelines to follow to attend. The participant guide will be send to you with all the information required.

Attendance Pre-Requisites 

Physically and Mentally fit

Our programs are physically and mentally demanding, we require you to be in excellent physical & mental shape to attend. You must be able to carry a NASAR Ready Pack weighing 18 Kilograms for at least 5 kilometers under an hour. You must be able to run 2200 meters under 12 minutes. You must proof this during the selection procedure.

Available during the whole
3 month lasting program and able to attend a 2 week in person part of the program.

Applicants must be fully available for the entire three-month duration of the program. Additionally, they must be able to attend a mandatory two-week in-person training as part of the program. This commitment ensures participants gain the full experience and training necessary for success in SARTREX.

Be able to fly to the Country
where the program is being held.

You must be able to pay for your own flight or travel to the starting / initial meeting location of the program. 

Age 21 / 65 years old.

To be eligible for the SARTREX program, applicants must be between 21 and 65 years old. We intentionally maintain a diverse age range to foster a well-balanced team with varying levels of experience, perspectives, and skills. This diversity enhances the training environment, ensuring that participants can learn from one another and contribute in unique ways.

Have no Criminal Record, be on a Watchlist or part of a designated terrorist/criminal organization.

At least 1 proven year of ACTIVE service in a Search and Rescue Organization. (Volunteer, professional or seasonal)

Applicants must have a minimum of one year of proven active service in a recognized Search and Rescue (SAR) or public safety related organization. This experience can be volunteer, professional, or seasonal, but it must demonstrate direct involvement in SAR operations, training, or emergency response. Candidates should be able to showcase their hands-on experience in real-world rescue scenarios, teamwork in critical situations, and an understanding of SAR protocols. Documentation or references may be required to verify this experience. The candidate/applicant must be able to 

MUST have a Personal Health & Travel Insurance before Applying.

All applicants must have personal health and travel insurance before applying. This is essential to ensure that you are covered in case of medical emergencies, unexpected travel disruptions, or other unforeseen circumstances during the program. Proof of insurance will be required as part of the application process.

Don't have these? We can't let you attend a SARTREX Program.

MUST have a SIGNED statement of a licensed doctor That you are in good Health before APPLYING to the program. 

Due to the ​demanding and often remote environments that SARTREX Programs run we DO NOT allow candidates to have any of the following conditions:

  • Heart disease or conditions.

  • Muscular conditions.

  • Those with cardiac problems.

  • Those with physical disabilities or deformations including deaf or blind people.

  • Those who refuse to adhere to country entry vaccination requirements.

  • Communicable Diseases:

    • Individuals with communicable diseases or conditions that may pose a risk to the health of others during the event.

  • Respiratory Conditions:

    • Individuals with respiratory conditions, including severe asthma, which may be adversely affected by (intense) outdoor or challenging environmental conditions.

MUST proof an ability to be an effective Swimmer. 

Because SARTREX programs often take place near or on the water, all applicants must have proven swimming capabilities. Being comfortable in aquatic environments is essential for safety and successful participation in the program.

FEAR is not direct eliminator's but will be considered during the selection procedure

  • Do not have a debilitating Fear:

    • Fear of water.

    • Fear of heights.

    • Fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia).

    • Fear of blood.

Opening for Application Submission Window

We will notify through communication channels like social media, newsletter and more that we are opening up for submissions for potential SARTREX program candidates. The form will be open to submissions. Time window will vary from year to year.

Application Submission (2-4 weeks)

Candidates submit their applications, which are reviewed for completeness and eligibility. Candidates fit or don't fit the requirements will be notified through email.

Interviews & Evaluations (2-4 weeks)

The candidates move trough the interview stage, then the Selection Committee makes the final selections.

Confirmation & Fee Collection

(1-2 weeks) – Selected candidates receive an official invite upon paying the administrative fee of 120 euros.
