Position Overview

The Logistics Section Chief is a critical leadership role within SARTREX, responsible for overseeing all logistical aspects of the program. This position ensures the seamless execution of training exercises, operations, and events by efficiently managing personnel, equipment, facilities, and transportation.

Success in this role requires a highly organized, proactive individual with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to dynamic environments. Familiarity with Incident Command System (ICS) 300 principles is essential, as logistical operations must align with standardized emergency management structures. The Logistics Section Chief plays a vital role in supporting search and rescue (SAR) operations by maintaining readiness, resource availability, and operational fluidity.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning & Coordination

• Develop and implement comprehensive logistical frameworks to ensure the smooth execution of SARTREX programs.

• Collaborate closely with Program Leads, Section Chiefs, and SAR Instructors to align logistical planning with training and operational goals.

• Utilize ICS 300 principles to structure logistics operations efficiently, ensuring an adaptable and scalable approach.

• Identify potential logistical challenges in advance and develop contingency plans for seamless execution.

Supply Chain & Resource Management

• Maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of SAR gear, medical supplies, and operational equipment.

• Ensure the timely procurement, storage, and distribution of all essential materials to support SAR training exercises and real-world response scenarios.

• Oversee equipment maintenance, inspections, and readiness checks before, during, and after program operations.

• Establish partnerships with vendors, suppliers, and emergency response agencies to streamline resource acquisition and optimize cost-efficiency.

Facilities & Venue Management

• Manage venue logistics, ensuring all training locations, operational bases, and classrooms are properly set up and functional.

• Coordinate accommodations, meal services, and utilities for program attendees, staff, and instructors.

• Oversee security measures and access control for restricted areas to maintain safety and confidentiality.

• Ensure that all venues comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Transportation & Deployment

• Arrange transportation logistics for program participants, instructors, and SAR teams, ensuring efficient movement between training sites.

• Coordinate the deployment and retrieval of SAR equipment to and from designated locations.

• Develop and communicate emergency evacuation plans, contingency protocols, and response strategies to ensure participant safety.

• Maintain a fleet of vehicles and watercraft (if applicable), ensuring operational readiness for SAR missions and training exercises.

Team Leadership & Supervision

• Lead a logistics team consisting of volunteers, support staff, and external vendors, delegating responsibilities effectively.

• Conduct briefings, training, and real-time supervision to ensure smooth logistical execution.

• Monitor and troubleshoot logistical challenges, providing immediate solutions to maintain operations.

• Foster a collaborative and mission-driven environment where efficiency and adaptability are prioritized.

• Function as a mentor for other participaints 

Budget & Cost Control

• Work within the allocated logistics budget, ensuring resources are utilized efficiently and cost-effectively.

• Track expenditures, report financials to SARTREX leadership, and make strategic decisions to optimize spending.

• Identify sponsorship and partnership opportunities to supplement logistical support and reduce costs.

Risk Management & Compliance

• Ensure all logistical operations adhere to safety regulations, emergency protocols, and ICS standards.

• Conduct risk assessments to identify potential logistical vulnerabilities and implement mitigation strategies.

• Maintain emergency response capabilities in coordination with medical teams and safety officers.

• Ensure that all logistical activities align with legal, ethical, and operational compliance standards.

Requirements

• Proven experience in logistics management, emergency response coordination, event planning, or SAR operations.

• Strong knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS 300) and emergency management principles.

• Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills to oversee complex logistical operations.

• Ability to work under high-pressure conditions and adapt to dynamic, unpredictable environments.

• Understanding of SAR operations, disaster response, or humanitarian logistics is highly desirable.

• Strong communication and coordination skills to effectively liaise with stakeholders, vendors, and emergency response teams.

• Experience in budget management, procurement processes, and resource allocation.

• Familiarity with asset management systems or willing to learn them.

• Must be able to fly and attent in person SARTREX events.

• Must be able to mentor other participants in this role.
